PRESS RELEASE ---- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Greater Derry Arts Council 2008 Theatrical Lighting and Sound Workshops Derry, NH The Greater Derry Arts Council is pleased to announce the 2008 series of workshops in theatrical lighting and sound. These workshops are free, but we request advance registration, so that we have a rough head-count. Participation in the workshops is open to anyone with an interest. The workshops also constitute one element of the Certified Production Staff program for the Adams Memorial Opera House (see http://www.derryarts.org/certified-staff.htm). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday, January 5, 2008 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon, and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Adams Memorial Opera House 29 W. Broadway Derry, NH Basic Lighting Workshop, led by Dave Nelson This workshop will introduce the concepts, practices and equipment Typically used in theatrical lighting design and production. The material will cover basic technology, including types of lamps and lighting instruments, dimming and control systems, cabling and power distribution and basic elements of execution, such as hanging and focusing lights. The morning session will be a lecture with examples, and the afternoon session will be a practical lab exercise. Broadway Derry, NH Intermediate Lighting Workshop, led by Dave Nelson This workshop will cover the analysis of a play script as it relates to theatrical lighting design. A selection of scripts will be available for analysis. Depending on the number of participants, we will break into small groups and then compare our design ideas. Broadway Derry, NH Basic Sound Workshop, led by Steve Devino This workshop will introduce the concepts, practices and equipment Typically used in theatrical sound design and production. The Material will cover basic technology, including audio signaling standards, microphones, mixers, outboard processing equipment, amplifiers and speakers. The morning session will be a lecture with examples, and the afternoon session will be a practical lab exercise. This course topic is presented each year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday, January 20, 2007 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon Intermediate Sound Workshop, led by Steve Devino This workshop will cover the following topics: 1. Radio Frequency (RF) planning for wireless microphone deployment 2. Effective placement of wireless microphones on actors This course topic varies from year to year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Devino has been doing live and recorded sound in NY and New Hampshire for over 30 years. He is the owner and chief engineer of Granite Rocks Recording Studio. Steve teaches audio classes privately at his studio and will be teaching very soon at the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University. Dave Nelson has been designing and executing lighting for community Theatre for over 30 years in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with well over 100 shows among his credits. Manager to coordinate event scheduling, box office, cleaning crews, front-of-house and
lobby setup, concessions, opening and closing the Opera House, and front-of-house
activities of our renters. The Assistant Technical Directors work under the direction of
the Technical Director to supervise load-ins and load-outs, assist our renters with
lights, sets, sound, rigging, special effects and other stagecraft matters, supervise the
backstage activities of our renters, and maintain and improve the Opera House's technical,
